My Friend Hetty Green

Join Lucy Bly as she portrays Countess Annie Leary and recounts stories about her best friend Hetty Green. Annie Leary was the daughter of a successful NYC businessman and was noted for her philanthropic activities directed towards the poor and sick. She arranged the debut of Hetty’s daughter Sylvia Ann Howland Green.

Hetty Green is best known for amassing wealth as a successful businesswoman but was nicknamed “the witch of wall street” because of her reclusive, miserly behavior. A unique perspective from her best friend Annie may offer a new appreciation towards Hetty.

About Lucy Bly

She is currently best know as one of the “1850s Ladies”, as part of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park’s first living history program, something she both co-developed and co-implemented with Judy Rodrigues. Lucy Bly and Judy are visible at numerous New Bedford events wearing their period clothing and speaking about themselves as if they were living in a previous century. Her character is actually a Bly ancestor named Ruth. Lucy is also an active member and frequent performer at Your Theatre, Inc. And with an additional affiliation with the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park as a seasonal Park Ranger, she is frequently seen downtown leading guided tours.
